An interview of candidates by the Maharashtra's forest department last week could well have been mistaken for a Fear Factor episode. The 10 aspirants were given snakes to demonstrate their skills for the posts of 'friends of snakes'. With snakes making a procession to residential apartments in the wake of losing forest cover, the forest department hopes that the "friends of snakes"can rescue the serpents and release them back into the wild.
As many as 102 snake lovers have so far responded to the appeal for the official snake catchers. Their brief will be to attend to panic calls from residents when they see a snake in their homes. "We will give identity cards to these friends of reptiles. People who make the panic call will feel assured that they have contacted the right person,"said conservator of forests Shree Bhagwan.
